FYLD secures £1.2m from OFGEM for groundbreaking project

FYLD is thrilled to announce the second phase of a ground-breaking project with SGN, National Grid, Cadent Gas and Northern Gas Networks, thanks to a further £1.2 million of funding from the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The project aims to transform safety in the utilities and heavy civils sectors, by developing and deploying a predictive, machine-learning model that anticipates high-risk events before they happen.  This is a core workstream for FYLD’s predictive analytics platform:  leveraging real time site data to drive 12%+ uplifts to productivity in the field, safely.

The first phase, completed last year with £500,000 of OFGEM funding, saw Predictive Safety Interventions (PSI) being enabled on the FYLD platform for a pilot group of users. The model used a range of data to alert field teams when it detected an elevated safety risk. These alerts were surfaced directly to field workers at the point of work, so that the insights could inform all site activity before it began.

The second phase of this project will go far beyond the alpha project, by incorporating many different data sources into the machine learning model, ranging from live access to traffic and weather feeds, through to historic safety information and human factors. Central to this phase is being able to deploy this capability across the gas sector and further afield, ensuring that fieldworkers and their managers are enabled to make safety-inducing interventions live in the field, supported by the FYLD platform.

Shelley Copsey, CEO at FYLD, said: “We’re delighted that OFGEM has fully bought into our product vision and committed to funding this second phase. FYLD has been successfully deployed at over 500,000 work sites to date, and with OFGEM’s support, we look forward to boosting this number through 2024 and beyond, and showcasing our unique capabilities in safety, as well as productivity and quality.

“Predictive safety is a game changer for any industry involving field workers. By increasing predictive safety interventions using real-time data, we decrease potential incidents, time lost to injuries and ultimately, fatalities. Our end goal is to make sure everyone gets home safe at the end of the working day, and predictive safety is fast-tracking us towards that target.

“We are proud to maintain this exciting level of innovation and success, and look forward to testing and proving our predictive safety capabilities at scale across the industry.”

FYLD secured the funding as part of OFGEM’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF). The SIF is delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
